Yough Opens Season Strong, Charleroi Struggles in Debut Matchup

The Yough Cougars (1-0) started their 2025-26 football campaign with an impressive road victory, while the Charleroi Cougars (0-1) stumbled in their opener, failing to put points on the board in a tough 44-0 loss.

Yough enters the season with momentum after edging out their first opponent, 21-14, behind a strong second-half surge. Their offense showed balance, averaging 250 rushing yards per game, led by standout running back Aidan Shaffer, who put up 132 yards on the ground. Shaffer also contributed through the air, passing for 10 yards and totaling 142 all-purpose yards—well above the national average.

On the receiving side, Ryan Sarver chipped in with 10 yards, while the defense was anchored by Darius Stephenson, who posted 10 tackles. The defensive front also made an impact, with John R. Gergely recording a sack and holding the opposing offense to just 14 points.

Charleroi, meanwhile, struggled to find offensive rhythm in their season opener. Despite solid efforts from their roster, the team couldn’t generate scoring production and now averages 0 points per game. Their defense faced heavy pressure throughout the game, giving up 44 points.

Statistically, the contrast between the teams is clear:

  • Yough is averaging 260 total yards per game, with most of that damage coming on the ground.

  • Charleroi has yet to register meaningful offensive numbers and will look to regroup before their next matchup.

Both teams remain untested in league play, but the early-season results put Yough in a stronger position. With depth on both sides of the ball and the ability to finish strong in the second half, the Cougars from Herminie look to build on their 1-0 start.

Charleroi, on the other hand, will be searching for answers after their shutout loss, needing to establish consistency on offense and shore up their defense to bounce back.

As the season continues, all eyes will be on how these two programs adjust. For now, Yough holds the edge with a promising start, while Charleroi looks to turn things around in Week 2.
